Price: Free for kids under 4 Adult admission is $41.95 - a bit pricey but worth it!
Tip: They recommend booking in advance online. It was really busy so I'm glad we did.
Wheely Friendly?
Yes and no. There are some parts of the museum where you can bring your stroller, but others you can’t (e.g., going to the train platform and in the mine). You also can’t store it on the train. In hindsight, I would have left our stroller.
There were hands-on exhibits which Yuyu enjoyed.
The Snack Situation:
Yes, there is the Chatterbox cafe on site, right behind the ticket desk. There is an assortment of coffees, sandwiches, and pastries. It's a neat place to spend time and read all the autographs of actors of movies/shows that were filmed at the Britannia museum.
Potty Proximity:
There is a bathroom near the entrance with a change table. Use the bathroom when you start your visit as there aren’t any facilities once you start the train tour.
Mum Musings:
It was pouring rain on the day we had booked to go, and it felt like a day to stay in, but we didn’t want to waste the tickets and I had hustled that week to find a place to put on our winter tyres - we learnt that you had to have them on the highway in BC after October 1st.
Truthfully I was skeptical about how much Yuyu and I would enjoy learning about copper mining but it was absolutely worth the effort! It’s always great to find a museum that interests Jamie and I while keeping Yuyu entertained, this nailed it.

Tour Tips & Highlights:
Be punctual for your tour. The drive took a bit longer in the rain and we missed our tour start time. Luckily, they were able to fit us in on the next tour so we started by visiting all the exhibits.
Indoor Exhibits: Highlights were a hands-on mining exhibit area specifically designed for kids and a 10-minute movie, "Groundbreaking" about the history of Britannia museum.
Gold Panning: Outside there is a unique area where you can try your hand at panning for gold. While the water was cold, we all got in on the action and I learnt that it's harder than it looks! They had lower panning areas for kids and Yuyu LOVED doing this.
Packing Note: She was wearing a raincoat, but you might want to bring an extra pair of clothes because she got wet.
Playground: There was also a giant sand pit and playground boat which looked like fun for a sunny day.
The Mine Route: The path to the train platform has many steps. Wear walking shoes; waterproof is a bonus
The Underground Adventure:
Prep Talk: Yuyu obliged and wore her hard hat but looked a bit sceptical. I’d suggest talking to your toddler about what to expect on the adventure.
The Mine: The train ride is quick (5 minutes), but then you’re underground where it's dark and damp with some interesting creaky sounds and a loud bang or two. Yuyu was the youngest member of our tour at 2 years old but she was totally fine and enjoyed trying to pick up rocks, jumping in the puddles, and being carried -it was a totally different sensory experience for her. Jamie and I valued all the info on mining techniques and the demonstration of the equipment in the mine shaft. You could vividly imagine what it must have been like to be a miner.
Comfort Note: I’d suggest bringing a light jacket/sweater as it does feel a bit cold underground.
Don’t miss the BOOM show at the end! What a fun and immersive way to learn about the history of Mill No 3. Yes, there are some loud sounds but they do give you ear plugs and there was enough notice to cover Yuyu’s ears.
Toddler Tolerance Level:
2.5–3 hours. Yuyu had such a fun day! There was so much to see and do, she loved it and was entertained the whole time, even though we missed her nap time.
Nap Roulette Options? Between the 45 mins drive to and from Vancouver and the full half-day of activity at the mine, we were happy to head home.
