Where We Spent a Wake Window: The Polygon Gallery-Kids First Event.

Parking Pointers: Street parking is available but very limited and restricted to only 1 hour.
We parked in the paid Lonsdale Quay Market lot and walked a few minutes to the gallery. It’s worth the peace of mind to not have to watch the clock.

Wheely Friendly?
Yes! I brought my stroller, and there was ample space to move around, plus elevators to take you up to the activity room.

The Snack Situation:
The Snack Situation: Food and drink aren't allowed inside the gallery spaces or the kids' activity room, but you can have them in the lobby sitting area ( which we did) or outside.
Tip: There is a cute cafe called Nemesis right next door. If I had my time back, I would have come earlier to grab a pastry there instead of "tearing up the house" trying to wait until the right time to leave.
Potty Proximity:
There is a bathroom with a change table right opposite the activity room - super convenient.
Mum Musings: Art, Crafts, and "Gallery Hands"
The Kids First program happens on the first Saturday and Sunday of every month. It’s a great setup where kids create a craft inspired by a current exhibition and get a guided tour of the gallery.
Happily walking around with the ‘swag’ bag that was provided at the event.
The Logistics
You are encouraged to sign up online to reserve your 10 AM – 2 PM time slot. I opted for 10 AM to ensure we’d be home for naptime. I did notice folks signing up at the counter so walk-ins are possible.
The Experience
We somehow missed the start of the gallery tour, but the staff was flexible! We started our craft first and joined the 11 AM tour instead.
I loved how the guides simplified things for the kids. They taught them to use "gallery hands" - basically holding their hands behind their backs so they don’t touch the art. Yuyu actually enjoyed the challenge of holding her hands together!
The Craft: This event is marketed for kids ages 5+, which makes sense as the craft was a bit advanced for Yuyu (at 2.5). However, she still had a blast playing with the glue and scissors while I did the heavy lifting on the project as we had a set time to complete before the next group arrived.
The activity room is bright and has a beautiful view of the harbour - it felt like we were on a real adventure.
Toddler Tolerance Level:
2 hours. After the craft and tour, we walked around for another 30 minutes so I could actually see the exhibits while Yuyu ran around.
On the way out, there are some rock structures near the entrance that Yuyu loved climbing - perfect for burning off that last bit of energy before the car ride.
Nap Roulette Options?
If you aren't racing home for a crib nap, the Lonsdale Quay Market is a few minutes' walk away for more food and exploration. We chose the "safe" route and headed straight home!
