Three Toddler- Friendly Beaches in Vancouver.
I had grand visions of wiling away our summer wake windows at the beach, but it turns out Yuyu doesn't like beach sand - go figure! So, we spent our summer months trying to get her acclimatized with some success. While we didn't spend as much time as I imagined, we did enjoy our adventures to these beaches.
1. Kitsilano Beach: The Lively Family Hub

Location & Parking: Paid parking is available near the beach, but be prepared for it to be busy, especially on a sunny day.
Price Check: Free
The Vibe Check: We've been at all hours due to our proximity! Early mornings are peaceful and perfect for a stroll, followed by a well-deserved breakfast pastry from Viva Cafe, who are absolute morning MVPs (open at 7am). By the afternoon, the beach transforms into a super popular, buzzing hangout spot with families, volleyball players, and joggers. With stunning views of the city and mountains, it’s a perfect spot for a solo mission to catch a sunset (if your little one's bedtime allows).
The Beach Itself:
The sand is soft enough for a great hangout, but be mindful of some rocky areas closer to the water.
While some people swim, we find the water a bit cold for anything more than dipping our toes in, even in the summer!
Yuyu's favorite beach activity is picking up "she shelfs" (seashells).
Beyond the Beach:
Playground Paradise: Kits is a toddler favorite because of all the extras! There’s a large play area with all kinds of swings to keep Yuyu busy.
Picnic Perfect: The manicured lawn is ideal for a picnic or BBQ. We've quite enjoyed taking tacos from Lucky Taco to eat on the grass.
Kits Pool: The Kits Pool is the neighborhood's piece de resistance, a heated, saltwater pool that looks magical. We've never made it in, as our beach days were always on a whim, and their drop-in spots are a gamble we've lost! Be sure to reserve a spot online.
Practical Pointers:
Wheely Friendly? Yes, there is a smooth walking path along the beach, perfect for strollers.
Snack Situation: Besides Lucky Taco, there are numerous restaurants and a concession stand near the Kits Pool.
Potty Proximity: Public bathrooms with a change table are available near the beach which we have used.
2. Jericho Beach: The Chill, Laid-Back Vibe

Location & Parking: Paid parking is available near the Jericho Sailing Club, just a short walk away.
Price Check: Free
The Vibe Check: I learned about Jericho Beach from the nurse giving Gabriel his 2-month needles. A mom of toddlers herself, she told me I'd "find our people" there. It’s a quieter, more laid back beach where cool millennials who used to hang out at Kits pre-kids have now graduated to Jericho with their families. I laughed when I went there because there was so much truth to it! It's a busy beach but with a very chill vibe and lots of young kids. A true beach/park combo.
The Beach Itself:
The sand is soft, and the calm waters are protected, making it a relatively safe place for kids to wade and play.
Hot Tip: For a great shady spot, set up shop on the right side of the concession stand.
Beyond the Beach:
Park Life: There's lots of greenspace and picnic tables for a BBQ (yes, you can bring a small BBQ).
Wildlife Watch: We spent most of our time there walking along the beach, with Yuyu chasing the rabbits and birds around. Just a heads-up, there are signs reminding you not to feed the wildlife!

Wheely Friendly? Yes, there is a great wide path perfect for strollers.
Snack Situation: We brought our own lunch, but there is a concession stand with fast-food options like burgers, fries, fish and chips, and ice cream.
Potty Proximity: Public bathrooms and change rooms are available near the beach.

3. Second Beach (in Stanley Park):

Our Scout Mission: A mom from Yuyu's playgroup told me this was her favorite family beach, so I added it to our list! We ran out of time, so I never got to take her, but I did a scouting mission on a bike ride around Stanley Park. I wish we had gone, it's a lovely beach haven for kids! What I'm sharing are my observations from that day.
The Vibe Check: The vibe was very family-focused, with lots of young kids around the park and the pool.
Practical Pointers:
Wheely Friendly? Second Beach is right off the Stanley Park Seawall, which is perfect for a stroller. You'd just need to find a place to park it while you're on the beach itself.
Snack Situation: There's a concession stand right near the pool.
Potty Proximity: Public bathrooms and change rooms are available near the concession stand.
The Beach Itself:
The beach itself isn't very big but is sandy and the water is easily accessible.
Beyond the Beach:
Ceperley Park: Right behind the beach is a wonderful park with a play area (Ceperley Park). It's a perfect place to set up a blanket on the grass for a picnic.
Second Beach Pool: My biggest surprise was the heated outdoor pool right near the beach! It provides a safe and controlled swimming environment for children, with little kids happily splashing in the shallow water.
Final Verdict
For the Social Butterfly: Choose Kits Beach for the lively atmosphere, people watching and the fantastic extras like the playground and pool.
For the Chill-Seeker: Jericho Beach is your spot for a more peaceful, laid-back vibe and a great combo of beach and park.
For the All-in-One Family Fun: Second Beach seems to be the ultimate haven for toddlers, thanks to its playground and fantastic heated pool.
